Honors Application Process for Transfer Students

Students who are applying for transfer admission to Miami University may be considered for admission to the University Honors Program if (at the time of application) they meet the following eligibility criteria. Transfer students must have

  • a 3.5 GPA (or higher) at their current institutions, and
  • be in their first or sophomore years.

Transfer students who meet these eligibility criteria do not need to submit a separate application or additional materials to be considered for the University Honors Program. They will be automatically considered for admission to the University Honors Program during their Miami University admission review process by the Office of Admission.

Transfer admission to the University Honors Program is highly competitive and selective. Miami University’s application review process is holistic. Students invited into the Honors Program have exceptional academic records and impressive extra- and co-curricular accomplishments. The Office of Admission includes invitations to the University Honors Program in students’ admission information packets.

Honors Requirements for Transfer Students

In addition to all coursework required of all Miami students (i.e., major, divisional, and Miami Plan required coursework), transfer students admitted to the University Honors Program must also complete at least four Honors Experiences within two years from their semester of entry.

Honors advisors are available to assist transfer students in developing their plan for completion of these Honors Experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Applying as a first-year or sophomore student from another university, is there a separate application to the University Honors Program?
No. All first-year and sophomore transfer students applying to Miami University are considered for admission to Miami and for select spots in the University Honors Program.

What criteria are used when reviewing applications?
Students who are invited to join the University Honors Program possess strong academic records as well as accomplishments and experiences that demonstrate that they are motivated, intellectually curious students.

If I am a junior or senior applying from another university, am I eligible to be admitted to the University Honors Program?
No. Because of the additional work required of honors students (beyond the coursework required of all Miami students), only first-year and sophomore students (at the time of application) seeking to transfer to Miami are eligible for admission into the University Honors Program as a transfer student.

How will I be notified of my Honors Program application decision?
If you are invited to join the University Honors Program, you will receive notification of this decision in your decision notification from Miami University’s Office of Admission.

Who decides which transfer students to admit to the UHP?
Miami University’s Office of Admission makes all decisions for transfer student admission. Working in consultation with the University Honors Program, the Office of Admission also makes selections for which transfer students will be admitted to the University Honors Program.
